One of the most frequently asked questions is when to use greases or assembly pastes and what the differences are. To provide a clearer understanding and to avoid repeating the same explanation every week, we have written this blog.
Why should I use grease or assembly paste?
There are several reasons to use greases and assembly pastes on your bicycle.
- Protection: Greases protect your bicycle against various factors. Rust will not develop when the correct grease is applied in the right place. Nothing is more frustrating when working on your bike than stuck nuts and bolts. The same applies to a seized seatpost. Applying the correct grease to these parts is very important to prevent such issues.
- Preventing creaks and squeaks: If the wrong grease or no grease at all is used on your bottom bracket, carbon seatpost, stem or handlebar, you will often experience creaking or squeaking noises. Regular greasing helps prevent this.
- Lubrication: All moving parts on a bicycle need to be lubricated so they can operate as smoothly and efficiently as possible. This also helps reduce wear. Examples of moving parts that require grease include wheel and headset bearings, bottom bracket and pedal bearings, suspension components, hubs, axles and pivot points.
Which product should I use for what?
Below we explain which grease or assembly product is best suited for each application.
- Galactic Grease: is a high quality biodegradable grease made from sustainable raw materials. It is suitable for almost all applications on and around bicycles. This grease can be used for assembling bicycle components and protects against corrosion and wear. It is also suitable for lubricating bearings and other moving parts. Galactic Grease is highly water resistant and has a stable viscosity, ensuring long lasting performance and reduced maintenance.
- All Round Grease: This is an affordable and versatile grease that can be used to assemble bicycle components. It also lubricates and protects bearings. As a true all round grease, it is not specifically optimized for one single application. It is a cost effective choice and convenient if you prefer working with just one type of grease. However, its lubrication properties are lower than those of our high end greases.
- All Round Grease Premium: This high end all round grease performs all the same functions as All Round Grease but offers improved lubrication properties for bearings. It comes very close to our dedicated bearing greases and is a premium all round option.
- NEW Assembly Pro: is a professional assembly grease for parts that need to stay firmly in place yet remain easy to remove later. It is suitable for pedals, bolts and threads, bottom bracket cups and contact surfaces between metal components. It prevents corrosion, seized parts and creaking noises thanks to a protective nano film. Assembly Pro is intended for assembly and protection, not for lubricating bearings. For bearings, you should use Bearing Pro or Galli Grease Pro.
- Fork Grease: is designed for suspension seals. Suspension forks and shocks primarily use oils for lubrication and these should not be replaced with grease. Fork Grease MTB protects the internal and external seals of your fork and should only be applied to the seals.
- Galli Grease Pro: is a premium bearing grease for all types of bearings and moving parts. It protects components and ensures maximum efficiency. This grease is not intended for assembly purposes. For assembly, Assembly Pro or Galactic Grease are better choices.
- NEW Bearing Pro: is a specialized high end bearing grease for bearings and pivot points that are constantly under load. It is suitable for wheel and headset bearings, bottom bracket bearings, axles and suspension pivots. During riding, the grease becomes more fluid, resulting in extremely low rolling resistance. At rest, it remains firm and provides maximum protection against water and wear. Bearing Pro is highly water resistant and protects against wear and fretting. It is the best choice for those who want to get the maximum performance out of their bearings.
